As you probably realize with the massive number of people who are unemployed right now and the dearth of available positions, this is not the ideal environment for a quick and easy job search. If you are starting to feel desperate because you may soon exhaust your unemployment insurance benefits, it is high time for ‘Plan B’. Some suggestions for a Plan B are as follows.

Consider Part-time and Temporary Jobs: You can earn money from either of these options and while you eventually need full-time income, ‘any port in a storm’. You can even have two part-time jobs that add up to a full-time income. Don’t be afraid to take something that is not lateral to what you did formerly. Money is money and you can look at it as a temporary solution if that helps.

As for temporary jobs, temporary agencies are the perfect way to find open positions. In the meantime you can be earning a temporary full-time income as assignments can range from days to months and even to years in duration.
You can continue your job search while working at a temporary job, and in fact find out what positions are available in the company — and that may even include the position you are filling temporarily.

Consider the Internet as a Business Opportunity: This is where your frustrating, fruitless job search can end right now.  You can take control of your situation and start a business online in a number of different ways. I am sure that the first thing you will celebrate is not having any tense, uncomfortable interviews or endless waiting for a determination.  You cannot be turned down. You can ‘just do it’.

Some ideas for this option would include joining an affiliate marketing program or becoming a wholesale distributor online. Both of these involve sales and the sky is the limit as to how much you can make, since that is only determined by how much effort you are willing to expend. A note here: Using Internet marketing techniques to get your prospects and
sales is way more pleasant and effective than chasing down your friends and relatives to try to sell them something. There is nowhere you can go but up from here!

It is very difficult to find jobs right now because companies are downsizing due to lower than normal profits.  Although the economy is rebounding to some degree, it will take longer for corporations and retail businesses to have the confidence to expand their workforce.

One of the very best ways to find jobs has always been to work as a temporary for a temporary agency.  Particularly right now, as the economy is improving, there is work to be done, and only skeleton crews who have survived job layoffs and workforce reduction.

A business would prefer to hire a temporary worker because they do not have to pay employee benefits such as medical insurance and pensions. This saves the company millions of dollars in the first place.

Additionally, they do not have to anticipate the possibility of another downsizing campaign where they will have to pay severance pay and unemployment benefits. Temporary workers have a contract, that is either delimited or open-ended – for example for ’2-weeks’ or ‘indefinite’, that could last for a year or more!

With that said, working as a temporary has always been a great way to find jobs even without a recession.  The reasons being that often the very job that you are being asked to fill temporarily is a position that they are or will advertise to fill in the near future.

If you are doing a good job and fit in with the culture at the company, you may be invited to apply for the position.  In fact this works great for them in that they can often save the cost of advertising and they have already seen your work habits and personality, unlike an applicant off the street.

As well, you will be privy to other positions that are or become available in that company, sometimes before they are even advertised. The power of networking plays well here, as you are known at least somewhat by people in the company who can speak well of you. Nothing better than an internal reference that includes proven skills.
