Start a Home Based Catering Business: Factors to Consider

Anyone who has the ability and talent to cook a wide variety of meals and snacks may want to consider going into the business of catering.  When you start a home based catering business, you will be taking a huge risk, but this comes with any new business. However, along with the risk comes several factors that you should take time to consider before you get your new business off the ground:

Licenses and Permits:  Before you can start a home based catering business, you must first contact your state’s Department of Health. They are required to do an inspection of the property from which your cooking will be done to determine whether or not it meets their safety and sanitary requirements that are in place.  You will also have to contact the business licensing division of the state, as well as your local town office, to determine if any other licenses or permits will be required.

While every state is different, you will find that some require anyone cooking is to be done from a kitchen that is separate from their home’s kitchen.  In other words, you can not cook food for your family from the
same kitchen.  This can easily make the cost of your start up venture well over your budget, so be certain to check into this matter before you take any other steps.

Marketing Strategy: When it comes to a catering business, you must do whatever you can to set yourself apart from local competition. Your food must be exceptional and you must have a menu with a variety of different types of food. Those who limit their menu will also limit their target market. If you plan to specialize your business toward specific events, such as weddings, be sure that your menu offers a variety of options for the new brides and grooms to choose from.

Employees:  When you start a home based catering business, you are going to need employees to help you. This can cause its own set of difficulties. After all, good reliable help can be difficult to come by. However, before you hire anyone, make certain a background check is conducted. You may also want to hire a payroll business to help you with your employee payroll, as it can free up a lot of your time, especially if you are not experienced in these matters. It may be an expense, but in the end, having someone else take care of this task for you will allow you the time you need to work on further developing your products.
